What are bank charges costing you?
  • Recent research suggests banks have been increasing charges to businesses over the past number of years which has contributed to banks recording their highest ever profits last year.

Most small businesses would probably be staggered to find out how much has been taken from them unlawfully for both and unauthorised overdraft. “Charges can range from £4 to £40 per day or up to £30 per debit, a potentially costly mistake for any business to make,” said Lee Tillcock from Business Moneyfacts.
  • Empire Claims can claim back up to 6 years of charges with interest. You could be moments away from getting £1000’s back!
So what exactly are Bank Charges?
  • Business accounts are different to consumer regulations because they are covered by what is known as ‘Common Law’
  • When a person opens a bank account or takes out a credit card they enter into a contract. Bank charges for going overdrawn or for bounced cheques are the equivalent of a charge for breach of contract because you agreed to stay within the limit.
  • Common law is quite clear and enshrined in 100 year old cases where any charges must reflect actual costs incurred by the banks. It is commonly thought the maximum charge that could be justified is about £2.50 whereas the charges are commonly about £30 per incident.
